  You’re missing the theme of this entire show. He’s not necessarily evil. We all feel like we have a purpose in life and he feels his is to destroy Itachi. The only way he will be able to succeed in what he feels like is his life’s purpose is to destroy a friend (Naruto) and achieve the Mangekyou Sharingan which is the only weapon strong enough to kill Itachi.
