its cos he rises to occations and challenges, n he doesn’t really control the nine tails chakra as much as he makes out. The nine tails only helps out when naruto is scared or detirmined… Like when he has to fight for his life, cos he didn’t percieve he swordsman as a threat to begin with the nine tails didn;t help out.

to kev and james: well the reason naruto got beat is because he and his team got caught off guard and he was like the fake version of sasuke hes fast but weaker and slower than sasuke. and james ur party right but your half wrong, remember the time when naruto beat the guy with lighting swords, he didn’t use the nine-tails at all.
