For all the talk about Itachi’s illness, I’m pretty sure its not Mangekyo Sharingan. There have been no clues to suggest that. Rather, he probably felt a horrible guilt from slaughtering his own clan. It’s well known today, Stress weakens the body and things like immune system. Also Mangekyo injures the eyes & depletes large amounts of chakra, which cant be good 4 body, since it’s so powerful (remember risks to Naruto for using Rasen-shuriken?). Besides, [SPOILER] …Itachi is getting what he deserves whether his intentions for massacre were good or not!

    That’s merely speculation. No one can be assured of what would have happened if Uchiha’s coup had won or been foiled. Also, if he hadnt done it when he did, the 3rd might have resolved the situation thru negotiations. Itachi was weak minded to allow the weight of the world to cause him to murder his own clan. You can’t influence the way of the world through violence by your own hands and expect stability & peace to follow everywhere.

      I have intentionally not watched newest episodes, so I can watch them all at once. And I have inadvertently read about the upcoming 4th Great Ninja War. However, no matter what we learn in future episodes… If Itachi believed a coup would result in the next Great Ninja War, he could have used the knowledge of the Uchiha’s plot to BLACKMAIL the Uchiha clan itself. Itachi could have threatened to divulge the Uchiha coup to rival countries or villages in order to quell or prevent the coup de tat from happening, instead of just slaughtering his clan. They COULDN’T IGNORE such a threat, since it might destroy all of Konoha & make a coup utterly pointless!!! And it could have just been one entirely BIG BLUFF by Itachi (just like he did to Sasuke his entire life); since Itachi only wants to protect peace & stability. His father was the fucking main instigator of the coup!!! There isn’t any way he couldn’t have pleaded – if need be, threaten – his father. Besides, Itachi had the Mangekyo Sharingan – far more powerful from regular version. Itachi could influence or convince his father to see it his way, with Tsukuyomi (either willingly or again his father’s will)!! Anyways with such an ultimatum, there’s no way he couldn’t at least have convinced his father to try to negotiate with the Third Hokage. And since I DO know of an impending Great Ninja War, obviously Itachi’s plan was foiled in the long run. War can be adverted temporarily but can never fully be prevented from happening. As long as people like Danzo & Madara were alive, Itachi had to have known war was unavoidable.
