In regard to the ‘stupid question’ statement, I understand why you feel that he should already know the answer, but it was a rhetorical question, as he is emphasizing the fact that Pain is the cause of nearly everything to do with revenge. Hinata was in pain watching, so she had to intervene. I hope this clears it up at least slightly.
